Getting started with Scraps
---------------------------
This brief manual gives quick instructions on how to get starting
with Scraps. For fuller information consult the main manual.
There is also a tutorial manual with step by step demonstration
of some of the functions of Scraps, together with examples of
uses to which Scraps can be put.
Installation
------------
Before you install Scraps you should make a copy of the Scraps
floppy disk, just in case anything should happen to it. Consult
your DOS manual for details on how to copy a floppy disk.
Hard Disk Installation
----------------------
To install Scraps on a Hard Disk use the supplied INSTALL
program. Place the Scraps floppy disk in a disk drive and type
either A:INSTALL or B:INSTALL from the DOS prompt, depending on
whether the floppy disk is in drive A: or B:.
Select the appropriate options from the INSTALL menu to Install
Scraps, read or print out these manuals.
Floppy Disk Installation
------------------------
If you only have floppy disk drives on your computer then
manually copy onto a suitable disk these minimum files:
SCRAPS.COM
SCRAPS.HLP
SCRAPS.DAT
To have the sample Scraps installed also copy to your floppy disk
this file:
SAMPLES.DAT
Using Scraps
------------
When you first run Scraps it opens the data file and reads in the
configuration information before showing the opening copyright
notice.
Then a small box will appear with the word "OK" in it. Press the
Enter key or click either mouse button to continue.
The screen then clears to show the main Scrap Editor screen.
This is where scraps are entered, edited and read.
Across the top of the screen are the names of the various menus
available can choose. Each menu name has a single high-lighted
letter. Hold down the Alt key and type that letter to pull down
the menu.
When a menu is pulled down choose an option from the menu or
press the Esc to abort the menu.
Along the bottom of the screen are some reminders of the keyboard
short cuts to access common functions without going through the
menus.
Try the Find command. Hold down the Alt key while typing F to
bring the Find menu down. Then type F on its own to choose the
Find command. Type the word SCRAPS in the space given and press
the Enter key twice to start the command.
Scraps will tell you how many scraps it has found, then press
enter or click the mouse to continue.
The scraps that have been found by the find command form a
'group' of scraps. What you'll see on your screen is the first
scrap in this group.
Near the top right hand corner of the screen, just under the
clock showing the time of the day, there will be two numbers
similar to "1/10". The second number is the total number of
scraps in the current group. The first number shows that the
scrap on the screen is number one of this group.
Press the Grey Plus key at the far right hand side of the
keyboard to view the next scrap, number two of this group. Keep
pressing Grey Plus to go through all the scraps in this group.
Grey Minus goes backwards through the group.
Past the last or first scrap there is a blank scrap. This is
where new information is entered. In the top right hand corner
of the screen it will say "New" to show that this scrap has not
yet been saved into the Scraps data file.
The Scrap Editor works just like a mini-Word Processor; all the
normal PC keys such as Insert, Delete, Home, End, Page Up and
Down, Ctrl-Left, Ctrl-Right, Ctrl-Home and Ctrl-End will work as
normal.
The command to save a new scrap on the Scraps menu, use the key
combination Alt and S to pull down the menu and pick the Save
command. They keyboard shortcut for this is the F2 key.
When saving a brand new scrap Scraps will ask for a 'reminder
date'. This field may be left blank, but if a date and time are
entered Scraps will note this in the scrap. Reminder dates are
used to provide audible chimes and to allow searching for 'due'
reminders.
The Scraps Tutorial manual gives a detailed step by step
demonstration of how these and other Scraps functions operate.
Configuring Scraps
------------------
Scraps will function on any PC as soon as it is installed. There
are, however, some configurable settings that you may wish to
change straightaway.
These options are all on option boxes from the SetUp menu.
Check for reminders at startup
------------------------------
Activating this option will cause Scraps to check all scraps to
see if any have a 'reminder date' that is due every time Scraps
is run. Set this option on if to use Scraps primarily as a
reminder system. Even if it is not set it is still possible to
use the command from the Find menu to search for currently due
reminders.
Use BIOS Video writes
---------------------
Normally leave this option set at the default of NO. In some
windowing systems or less compatible PCs it is advisable for
Scraps not to write directly to the screen but to use BIOS calls
instead.
This setting it comes into effect at once. This can cause
strange video effects in some situations. Exit the program and
restart to fix this.
Colours
-------
Initially set to Force Mono change this to Autoselect unless your
PC has a colour video card used with a mono monitor as this
combination might produce unreadable 'colour' text.
AutoDialer Setup
----------------
On the autodialer set up box install Scraps autodialer for use
with your modem.
Set the "Serial Port" as appropriate. Do not change either the
Modem init string or the Modem dial string unless you have
unusual requirements in which case refer to the modem manual.
Setup Security
--------------
This dialogue box allows you to activate the security system of
Scraps. Scraps security consists of an access password and file
encryption.
See the section in the manual on "Security" for details.
All Scraps settings is stored in the SCRAPS.DAT file together
with scrap data. Should this file every be erased it will be
necessary to reconfigure Scraps.
